BR-41 MESS FOLK - This
is Mess Folk... And More! LP
MESS FOLK is from Sydney, Nova Scotia, in Canada. It was started by Philip
Tarr in December 2008. This is a complation record featuring various recordings
from 2008-2010. This is basicly the 12 Song „This is Mess Folk” Tape, released
in 2009. It first came out with a couple of copies as self release, then SCOTCH
TAPES did a batch of 100 copies. Three songs ended up an a 7" out on HOZAC
records. This LP also has 10 new and unreleased songs. All songs have been
mastered for this release by Justin Perkins.
Now as you know the story, start listining to these devastating cuts of
delusional inner turmoil that sets in after months of cabin fever. What else
can you expect, when growing up in a small industrial city which is known for
pretty much one thing: being the second-largest toxic environmental disaster
hot spot in Canada.
„When the three major industries that supported Sydney collapsed in the late
60s, they left 700,000 tons of chemical waste and raw sewage filling about the
size of three city blocks, and a lot of broke, angry people who speak funny.
This place is known as the Tar Ponds. It’s entirely fitting that this isolated
area, with just about the highest rates of cancer, birth defects, and
miscarriages in the country, would push one of the most messed-up new voices in
the garage rock scene through it’s contaminated thighs.”
[Vice Magazine intro for the MESS FOLK interview]
Thanks to drugs and insanity MESS FOLK mastermind Philip Tarr composed pieces
of music with extraordinary beautiful titles like „I Shit Blood”, „Give Me a
Gun” and „High as Hell”. The music itself sounds like proto punk recorded in a
4x4 meter bedroom, doors locked, windows nailed down and the air filled with a
mixture of angst, paranoia and hate. What did you expect? Sugar-coated Anti Folk?
Come on.... This is Mess Folk.
BR-42 SUGAR STEMS -
The Sweet Sounds of the... LP
Welcome to another joyride in the BACHELOR train from/to Milwaukee.... We are
very proud to be part of this release, the debut full lenght of the SUGAR
STEMS! One year ago the band sent me a six song demo CDR which made my boss
drool. He immediately inked a deal with these kids and put out their debut
7" which got a lot of raving reviews. They went to the MYSTERY STUDIOS
with Justin Perkins (again), who recorded another batch of great songs, most of
which you can find on this full lenght release.
These two guys and two gals churn out hit after hit, think of THE SHIVVERS with
proper production or female fronted RASPBERRIES with a kick!!! I am talking
about wholesome powerpop fun, pressed on beautiful black vinyl, housed in a
cardboard sleeve designed by Chris Tayler / X-Ray Vision - this package is like
a chewing gum that never loses ist flavour!
The US Version of this LP is coming out on DUSTY MEDICAL RECORDS, there is also
a CD Version on DREAM ON RECORDS in Japan.
BR-43 THE HUMMS -
Lemonland LP
The Humms were formed in March of 2008 by Zeke Sayer with friend Tyler
Glenn in Hartwell, GA. They recorded the first songs in Zeke's studio which was
(at the time) housed in a 1950's mobile home using an extension cord for power
and was self-proclaimed to be haunted by the previous owner of the property who
died right outside the door. Two months later in May they added a drummer, John
Bleech. They practiced in Zeke's living room for five months, often playing for
whoever happened to be around the house during parties on the weekends. In
October, they played their first official show at Tasty World in Athens, GA. By
February of 2009, Zeke obtained a van from the town's local Funeral Home which
lead to such projects as “Humms on the Run” where the band drove to 12+
locations in one afternoon and by using power from the van's cigarette lighter,
they played one song at each location. No one except by-standers and the band
themselves actually saw the “shows” as all the locations were desolate dusty
roads, abandoned houses and industrial plants. The entire event was filmed but
has not been released. The band began touring during this time but only on the
weekends due to John and Tyler still being in high school. They would drive
over 1200 miles in a day to play one show and then often head straight back
right after words. between touring, the band managed to record an albums worth
of material that was never released, although four of those tracks came out on
the band's debut EP “Are You Dead?” that was released in London in June 2009
thanks to Oddbox Records.
In the same month, the band relocated to Athens, GA and gained a slim but
sturdy following from playing the local clubs like Caledonia Lounge and the 40
Watt. In November directly after a show, Tyler and John left the band due to
undisclosed reasons. Sayer moved back to his home studio in Shoal Creek, GA and
began work on the first Humms record intitled “Lemonland”. After 5 months of
work on the debut, the Humms saw a live format once again thanks to Kentucky native
Jessica Miller on Bass Guitar and West Coast drummer “Ziggy Zag” of the band
PIPSQUEAK (they have a 7" out on Bachelor). There is a CD Version of this,
plus some extra tracks out on ODD BOX Records, England.
